Lost
in Davenport 10/18/2000
by John Peacock (aka Stardust)
Well, it seems as if someone noticed I hadn't written anything in a month, so I guess it's time to update! So thanks to Ty (Soilent Green) for motivating me to write this.
What's happened in the last month? A whole hell of a lot, a ton to go over. The Deadly Wrestling Federation has continued to be on a hot streak from both the workrate and storyline perspective. I couldn't be happier with the way things are now, especially taking into account the events of the last week (Bad Week 2000). Let's go over what's happened recently....sound like fun, doesn't it?
It goes without saying, because if you have visited the DWF page it's quite noticeable, but the Madman has left the federation. Now out of respect to him and his decision, which I understand totally, I won't go into his reasons for leaving. All I can really say here is "thank you" for helping so much with the fed during the times when backyard wrestling didn't really seem worth the trouble, when we only had four people, and when we needed a big return. Madman (Travis) was always a joy to have around at shows even if he wasn't working a match, because he without a doubt has one of the best senses of humor I've ever met. Thanks for everything.
With that said, the week didn't get much better after I received Madman's resignation letter. I was IM'd by Ben (Rocky Relentless) who told me he was quitting. Now Ben was being given the other upper card push doing the "invincible" gimmick, and this was the last thing I wanted to hear. Luckily, he's only taking a short absence and working an injury angle on top of a face turn! That's cool though, in the off time Ben told me he's going to work on his in ring skills, which is really good. For all the problems we've had, Ben's still a dependable guy for shows, he's always improving and I do consider him a friend.
So, all this, combined with a freak rib injury to Papa Fly led to some major changes. Our "Burning Nightmare" (no doubt the worst name I've ever come up with for a show) card in a week has turned into more of a "get new angles going" show then huge "heel vs face" blow off show it was going to be. Rich Reckless went heel, which is just fine, he could really work as a heel and it adds more emotion to the World Title match that might not have been there with the before planned "face vs face for respect" type of match.
The other
major is the return of the Pitfighter, taking Madman's place in a match with me
in a little over a week. Pitfighter's return was really something great,
right up there with the other great returns and angles this year, and I am glad
to see him back. I've known Pitfighter since the summer of 1996, and he was one
of the first people to help start the Deadly Wrestling Federation. But
other "outside" things happened and he faded from the
fed and honestly I wasn't sure if he would ever come back. However, he
seems to be really into backyard wrestling again, so it's good to have someone
back on the roster who I've worked with a lot before and is eager to go. The
match a week from Sunday should be good, really hoping me and him can have a good
match like we used to be able to.
Does this column seem disjointed? It does to me, but that's because I'm writing it from school, and two freshmen are talking to me so I can only halfway concentrate on what I'm writing.
Well, the main event, despite being shaken up, is now back and order. Amazingly though the midcard seems to be booming! Actually, it's amazing in itself that I can even say we have a midcard! You couldn't say that six months ago, but between Lanka Fabuloso,Twisted, Skulleosus, Easy Cheat, Angel of Death, Snake Fight, and Trevor Gaze, we have a pretty solid midcard. Where's Tybolt Lemur in that list? I consider Tybolt so borderline main event/high midcard it's not even funny, so hopefully he'll be moved up after Halloween has come and gone. Tybolt's got this great charisma and a great character, so he deserves to be up there in World Title contention.
More DWF
stuff!! WOW! A few weeks ago I got in contact with the other Davenport backyard
group I think I mentioned a few columns ago, and Tybolt and myself went to watch
one of their shows. Now, the booking is very loose and the matches ran a
bit long with some non-conclusive finishes, but I was really impressed with a
couple of the workers. Well, they only have four guys so I guess I could say I
liked half the roster. Not that Odessy or Mr. Rob are bad, both are pretty
alright brawler, just not as smooth as the other two, James Green and Diamond
Storm. Green and Storm have already agreed to join the fed (and Mr. Rob
possibly too) , and I feel a lot like Rob (the pSyChO one, not the Mr.) getting
talent from other BYW feds. Green is really smooth and him and myself worked a
really good match, which surprised me because I haven't worked that good a first
match with anyone in a long time, so I'm quite high on his talents. Storm as a
tad overuse of the swanton, but he has a great willingness to bump and wrestle,
which is great. I'm glad to have both in the fed. With the new talent we
were able to create a new title, the Midwest Backyard Heritage Title (Remeber
the old western states title?), which Green won in a tournament. If anything,
I'm hoping the new belt can become as traveled
as the pF CW Title has become, thus I didn't name the new belt "DWF new
belt".
So things
are looking up, which is huge shock to me, the next month or so look like a
growing process as the new talent get settled in and old guys get elevated.
Anyway, yeah, that's it, I'm out of things to say and school is over, thanks for reading, take care.
