*DWF: Winter War 2002, The Rebirth!

An additional final shoot commentary by Ty Medema...a mini "Konversation from the Klondike" to top it all off.. if you will.. concerning the DWF's latest run-in with the press!

There are many things I could write here, as it has been quite some time since my last column, and in all likelihood this will be my LAST such column.  However, most topics BYW related that I would or should talk about are already several months old, and therefore beaten into the ground and useless to dredge up again. Or, quite frankly, I really have no interest in them anymore.  Also, I could keep people's attention for only so long talking about my upcoming move off to college and other things about my personal life. I also don't want this commentary to take away from the above announcement of Rich's renewed efforts to kick-start the DWF in the absence of all other members. While BYW hasn't been at the forefront of my priorities this summer, I do want to see not only the DWF, but BYW as a whole continue to thrive.  As long as BYW wrestlers take the opportunity to learn some basics and get a real sense of ring psychology (as opposed to just risking their bodies and ruining their futures), BYWer's are the future of the industry, no doubt about it.

However, there was one final topic I needed to tell everyone about, and to give my own personal opinion of.  Since this story relates to that of the local press, I mean this as an official commentary in my own unique journalistic style (not quite Hunter S. Thompson's notorious "Gonzo Journalism", but I'm getting close).  So bear with me, for as a journalism major I can't help myself! :o) .........

The DWF has received some local press as of late, and the record needs to be set straight to all who view this site. Several weeks ago, WQAD Newschannel 8 ran a story on Backyard Wrestling, and the focal point of this story was the DWF.....or so the viewers thought.  During the segment, which was put together and reported by Eric Roby, footage was shown of kids hitting each other with chairs, jumping off ladders, and other extremely violent acts. Showing the dangers and overall stupidity of Backyard wrestling, Mr. Roby wove a shocking tale of what could be going on in your own backyard!!  However, the footage that was shown WAS NOT that of the DWF, yet the DWF's name was used and slapped onto this poor excuse for BYW "talent".  In addition, this very website you are viewing was highlighted, further linking the other footage to the DWF name and product.

Now I personally  was contacted by Mr. Roby about a possible story on Backyard Wrestling about a week beforehand. However, I missed his call, and he left his number for me.  I tried several times to get in touch w/ Mr. Roby, telling him the DWF's more traditional product may not be what they were looking for (since obviously they were looking for a bunch of young stupid teenagers to exploit --hence the footage of whatever fed WAS aired), but that I was interested in helping him out in any way I could, and wanted to help him get his story.  My thought on this was that maybe the news could air a segment on the senseless risks many Backyard fed's take, and then compare it to our tamer, more storyline- oriented product.  A long shot that the news would put BYW in a positive light, yes, but worth a shot.  Alas, Mr. Roby in all of his efforts to give you the BEST news in the Quad Cities failed to return any of my calls. I had left my home, cell, and work phone numbers for him!! Obviously Mr. Roby had done some homework on local BYW feds in order to come up with my name, and he must have been aware that I was the webmaster of this site, so you  would think that (not to be conceded) he would realize I'm one of the premier BYW personalities in the area and would want to talk to me. After a week or so of not hearing back from him, I had written off the incident, until one day my email inbox started to flood w/ emails about people who saw a BYW story on the news the night be4 highlighting the DWF!!!

Since the newscast, I along with several other members of the DWF have attempted to contact Newschannel 8 and more specifically Mr. Roby to find out how they made such critical journalistic error while running this story.  Yet once again, no response.  I even had a secretary tell me he wasn't in the building when I have proof he was!!!! As a journalism major, I am severely appalled by the total lack of journalistic professionalism exerted by WQAD over this story!!  Though honestly, I've never had much respect for that particular station anyway.  I've always found them rather juvenile and amateurish in their presentation of what they consider the best news station in the area.

Unfortunately, one simple story wasn't the end of this fiasco. Approximately a week or 2 after the initial story ran, Newschannel 8 ran a follow up. I personally didn't even hear about this follow up until about a week ago, for my girlfriend had seen it and didn't tell me about it right away b/c she knew it would anger me.  This time, the focus wasn't on that of the DWF, but of another fed in the area.  This "fed" consisted of about 5 pre-teenaged kids who wrestle under the supervision of one child's mother. Now I only use the term fed lightly b/c of their age and other overall signs of non-organization.

Personally I have no qualms that they are supervised and even taught by their parents...good for them!! I hope that in the coming years the make a name for themselves.  No, what was bad about this story is that Newschannel 8 used this group to show how BYW "should" be done, and went on to slander the DWF by comparing the other group to the "brutal, savage" acts of the DWF!!!!  Interviews were conducted w/ several members of the other group, where one stated "I've never heard of this Deadly Wrestling Federation, but if I ever meet them I'll teach them how to really wrestle!" (that quote's not exact...but pretty close...wouldn't want Mr. Roby calling me down for unprofessional journalism or anything!) Now what the hell is going on here??? Did Channel 8 EVER see any DWF footage? NO!!! Did they ever talk to any member of the DWF (past or present)??? NO!!!!! Yet the DWF, being the premier organization around, became the undeserving target of the slam campaign.  My only reasoning why would be that 1) we are the most widely known group around, and 2) our name....the DEADLY WRESTLING FEDERATION!! Ok, here's a little hint to you journalists out there....the names a GIMMICK!!! It's actually even a cliche', taking the most obviously BYW-esque name we could think of!! Yet, are we "deadly?"  Of course not!! Do we take even 1/2 the risks other BYW feds do?? NO!!  If anything, the young group showcased on the news should be compared to the DWF in it's earliest stages!!! "The next DWF to come!!"  Now THAT'S a respectable headline!!

Instead, this group was held up on a pedestal that they can't even begin to fathom, while the DWF was kicked in the face for all the Q.C. to see by a less than stellar Newstation and a young, ignorant reporter who obviously doesn't care about giving the people the real story. (Makes ya wonder why he got into journalism...for the money?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)  Way to screw this one up, Channel 8!!!

I guess I really shouldn't be so hard on them though, I mean with the DWF's current state of hiatus the backlash on us overall was minimal...and furthermore no one watches that damn station anyways!!! (Sorry, I'll admit that was a juvenile statement in what I've otherwise tried to keep a legitimate commentary, but I couldn't resist)

Ya know, what really hurt about this whole incident though was that all I wanted to do was help Mr. Roby get the straight story, and even get BYW put in a positive light for once.  Well, I got my wish, I guess, for one BYW group got some positive press...while the group that was most deserving of it (at least in this area) got dragged through the mud.  If only Mr. Roby had been professional enough to return my call.

In any case, I just wanted to set the record straight for anyone visiting this site who may have been lead here b/c of the "news" story.  Thanks for reading, and be wary of sensationalism.

Wars End 2k1 has come and gone!! The DWF's first show under it's new regime was full of suprises, and we have all of the results for you below, along with a preview of DWF's next show, Taco Hell 3!!!

Backstage: Pre-Show

Wars End, the first DWF show under new ownership and power w/in the company, started with Lord Fairington in the back, yelling at and blaming Twisted and Mr. Sunday for allowing Angel to get hit by a car. After a brief exchange of words, Twisted and Mr. Sunday BEAT DOWN Fairington, leaving their now former leader unconscious!!!!

Show Opening: Rich Reckless Interview

The show officially opens with Rich Reckless coming out to give his first ever opening promo as a DWF co-owner!  Reckless started off explaining the details of the change in power, and then stated that the card for the day had been changed from what had been previewed here on DWFOnline, due to unforeseen circumstances.  Rich then went on to announce that he has a NEW contract for a former DWF employee who will be coming back as the new DWF commish ...and it is none other than Commissioner Louis!!!! This startling news didn't settle well with Rocky, however, who came out to shoot down Reckless' plan. The other 50% new owner of the DWF, Rocky proceeded to announce that he had a commissioner of his own to announce!! And in classic heel fashion announced that "Yes, the man who has beaten rich many times before! You're new DWF co-commissioner... Soilent Green!!!" Two owners and two commissioners?! What's going on here???

Soilent's music hit, and out came the big Alaskan.  After accepting his new role as co-commissioner from Rocky (and signing the contract),  Soilent began a little speech about the DWF, stating (among other things) how he is now officially the most veteran wrestler in the DWF (besides Pitfighter, who was gone for a year), and where he expected the DWF to go in the future now that he and Rocky were back together.  However, it didn't take too long for Soilent to get to the topic of Commissioner Louis. Despite blaming Commish Louis for being the one who held Soilent back in the beginning of his career and causing a period of downfall in the DWF, Soilent based his attack on the fact that Commissioner Louis hadn't been seen since he "disrespectfully" first established the DWF Tag Team Title, which Soilent himself won along with Night Soil. After Rocky interjected to ask Soilent where he was going with this, Soilent announced that remembering Commish Louis made him come to the decision that the DWF Tag Titles would be brought back to the DWF!!! Soilent stated this would be the first of many steps to assure that Louis and Rich would be kept in check, and that a match for the newly re-instated titles would be held later that evening.  Rich, not be topped, reacted to Soilent's announcement by setting up a match between Soilent Green and Rocky Relentless for the main event of the evening!  After a moments thought Soilent says that as commish he will 'allow it", stating that a match between him and Rocky would be "fun." Soilent then countered by doing some more booking of his own, obviously taking advantage of the fact that Louis wasn't there for the show. Proclaiming that Rich would have to defend his DWF World Title, Soilent ran through a list of possibly opponents, finally settling on Snake Fight! Snake Fight is going to get a World Title Shot tonight!!! Snake Fight made his way out to the ring moments after the announcement, confronting Rich as Soilent and Rocky head backstage laughing. Rich gives him a little speech about respect to Snake Fight, and the segment ends with Rich an Snake Fight on the verge of blows, until Soilent comes back out and breaks up.

Match 1:  Reebok-vs-Snake Fight

Making his return to the DWF after an unsuccessful stint in the XFL, Reebok came down to ringside his usual over-excited self. Commentator's Ty and John tried to get a word w/ Reebok about his experiences in the new defunct football league, but before he could get a word in Snake Fight made his entrance and began laying into Reebok. There's not much else to really say about this match, as Reebok lost to a simple snapmare(!!!!) Snake Fight made a quick departure after this bit of a warm-up for him.  Reebok slowly rose, licking his wounds as he finally gave us some insight on the XFL...'cuz really, isn't that all we really care to hear about from him?

Match 2: Snake Fight-vs-????

                       Midwestern Backyard Heritage Title

Snake Fight came back out to ringside after Reebok departed, issuing a challenge to anybody for his Midwestern Backyard Heritage title. WHAT!!! ..TWISTED comes out and attacks Snake Fight from behind!! Snake Fight quickly regained control with some stiff knees to Twisted and threw him to the ground, relentlessly beating him and dropping a massive leg. Snake Fight remained in command for majority of the match, finally picking Twisted up and snapping on the Surprise! You're Dead! (implant DDT). Instead of going for the pinfall, however, Snake Fight kneeled over Twisted and began talking trash until (not surprisingly) Soilent Green attacked Snake Fight from behind! Soilent then called down his partner, Rocky, who came out too join the party and laid out both Snake Fight and Twisted with a metal plate. Rocky then lifted up Snake Fight as Soilent climbed the side of the ring, and the duo delivered their sidewalk-slam/diving elbow double-team maneuver, which became infamous during their last tirade through the DWF. Then Rocky rolled Twisted on top of Snake Fight for the Pinfall!! Oh my God Twisted is the new MWBYH champ!!!!!  Twisted celebrated his victory by flashing his new belt to the camera and laying Snake Fight out with it.

Match 3: Soilent Green-vs-Lord Fairington

Soilent made his way down to ring side, and with all the cockiness he could muster stated that he had decided to put himself in another match tonight, against Lord Fairington! However, Lord Fairington never shows, obviously having left after the run in with Mr. Sunday and Twisted. As Farington is counted out, Soilent complained that this isn't fair, and that he wanted some action tonight. However, an idea seems to occur to Soilent, and he says he has decided who will be competing for the Tag Titles...the team of Mr. Sunday and Twisted against...Rock and Soilent!  Soilent then left, an amused smile on his face. Does anyone else not find this all that surprising?

                      Backstage Segment: Rich's Office

This next segment showed Rich Reckless in his new office on the phone, taking care of business. A knock on the door, and in comes Snake Fight. Rich informs him that he is not to wrestle anymore matches for the night until the title match.
Snake Fight wants to know why, and Rich says he doesn't want him to have any excuses when he can't win the title from Rich.

Match 4: Tag Team Title
Soilent Green & Rocky Relentless-vs-Mr. Sunday & Twisted

Twisted & Mr. Sunday come out first. Twisted is enjoying his new belt!  Next the champs, who come out totally relaxed and not really too serious about the match. Rocky and Twisted start off, Rocky gets on his knees and puts up his hands to Twisted and get him in a arm ringer then turns it into a swinging neckbreaker, but Twisted somehow lands on rocky and hurts him. Now Twisted has control, but not for long as Rocky delivers an awesome piledriver. Rocky tags in Soilent, who continues the onslaught.  Soilent puts on a front face headlock, and Rocky comes in for the cheap shot.  Soilent goes over to sneak one in on Mr. Sunday (who is reading a book???), practically knocking the mask right off of him.  Soilent continues to work on Twisted and kicks him square in the back of the head. Rocky tags in and executes a gutbuster, slaps Mr. Sunday for good measure, then picks Twisted up and another gutbuster. Rocky continues to power his opponent, after a while tagging in Soilent. Rocky picks up twisted as for the second time this show Soilent and Rocky execute their diving elbow/sidewalk slam combo. Oh my god Twisted kicked out!! He tries to tag in the literary Mr. Sunday, but Soilent catches him and slaps on the "Klondike Stretch".  Rocky comes in for some cheap shots again, and Soilent picks up twisted for a big power slam. Rocky then hit the leg drop off the top ropes. Soilent FINALLY goes over and pulls Mr. Sunday into the ring, and began to work him over. Once again they perform the double team spot, as Soilent lands hard with the big elbow off the top rope onto Mr. Sunday.  On to Twisted, and they execute  a double face buster.. 1-2-3!! It's over, Soilent and Rocky are the brand new DWF Tag Team Champs!!

Match 5: Snake Fight -vs- Rich Reckless(c)

               DWF World Title

This one started off with Snake Fight hitting rich from the back as he came out for the match, knocking him down the stairs to the basement. Snake Figt throws Rich onto the pool table and begins too pound him. Rich finally powers the One Man Army off of him and drop kicks Snake Fight from the table!  Rich takes over on offense and begins to pound Snake Fight, who quickly retaliates with a strong punch to the gut and then pounds him to the ground.  Rich is then put back on the table and kicked in the face.  Snake Fight then wrenches Rich's, but Rich retaliates by boxing the ears of the Army. Rich then regains control, giving a huge clothesline to Snake Fight, afterwards working on his legs and picking him up to deliver the "Richatine". Rich then threw a stiff shot too Snake Fight and splashes him on the pool table. Snake Fight grabbed a pool ball and repeatedly hit Rich in the face with it, but Rich tried to regain control by picking up an old fan (an oscillating fan, not a supporter of the DWF) and RAMMED Snake Fight in the stomach and in the head repeatedly.  Rich  then got technical with Snake Fight, working on his legs and and using the now broken fan as leverage to wrench his knee. Snake Fight though manages to muster some power and throws Rich back onto the pool table, again pummeling him with those massive forearms. Rich retaliates with a flurry of punches and kicks, then wraps Snake Fight around a water pole in the basement, strapping on a standing submission maneuver and throwing blows at his kidneys.

Snake Fight battles free, and hauls Rich with some repeated knees to the gut. However, Rich tries to counter by jumping into the air, grabbing hold of a crossbeam and lifting his legs over the shoulders of the One Man Army in an attempt for a hurricanrana. Snake Fight however overpowers the smaller Rich, powerbombing him directly onto the pool table!!!!!!!  Snake Fight then tossed Rich over to the bed, where Rich hit Snake Fight with a chair, knocking him backwards and threw a table!!!! Rich removes the rubbish that crashed down onto Snake Fight, and began to beat on him with a pool cue.  Rich, really getting the upper hand now, put Snake Fight back on the pool table and puts him in a camel clutch. Snake Fight reversed the hold, lifting Rich into the air and dropping back to smash rich onto the ground!!  He then beat Rich in the head with a metal plate, and went for the pin. Rich kicks out ,so Snake Fight then slam Rich repeatedly with the top of the broken table. After grabbing a pool cue, Snake Fight stalked Rich on the ground. After a bit more of an exchange, Snake Fight grabped Rich by the FACE and CHOKESLAMMED him onto the pool table!! (We hear he calls it the Snake Bite) Instead of letting go, however, he then laid all of his wait down onto Rich's face wit his palm, and eventually it was too much for Rich, and he taps out on the pool table!! Snake Fight is the NEW DWF CHAMPION!!! After the match Soilent and Rocky decided to ruin the fun, running down and beating up both competitors. Even though Soilent and Rocky left standing, Snake Fight and Rich had a hell of a match, and we have a new champ to show for it!

Match 6: Rocky Relentless -vs- Soilent Green

This match started off with Rocky  hitting Soilent from behind on the back porch, only to have Soilent counter just in time and throw Rocky over the railing, falling 15 feet to the ground and landing hard on his side. However, the camera man stated that he missed the shot because of Soilent's massive frame, so to please the fans Soilent threw his friend Rocky over again!!, this time the camera caught the whole shot as Rocky landed squarely on his shoulder.  They then took the action to the ring for some interesting (and very suprising) chain wrestling. Quite the series of technical prowess, as these two remained at a stale-mate for a good while.  You could tell these guys know each other very well in the ring.  Tryin to gain an upper hand, Rocky managed to roll soilent up into a la-mah-istrah (whatever) cradle, but couldn't get the pin.  After another technical exchange, Rocky attempted to lock a sharpshooter onto the big man, but didn't have the energy left to get him over. Just as Rocky was contemplating his next plan of attack, however, Rich Reckless came with a board, striking both Soilent and Rocky. Rocky and Soilent manage to battle back and overpower Rich, but Snake Fight immediately made his way down to aid Rich. They manage to get the better of Rocky and Soilent for a while, but the fatigue from the beating they both took in their World Title match began to take it's toll, and Rocky and Soilent wreaked havoc.  As the show went off the air, both Rich and Snake Fight were left laying in the ring as Rocky and Soilent escaped from the DWF arena with a clear upper-hand in this, the first of what seems to be a long battle ahead for control of the DWF.

-After the surprising turn of events at Wars End, anything is possible for the DWF's next show: Taco Hell 3!!  Wars End was based heavily on the fact that Rocky and Rich are now split in ownership of the company.  During the show, Rich declared that he had a special choice for his pick as the new DWF commissioner, and it was none other than... Commissioner Louis!!!  Not to be topped, however, Rocky announced that he had a commissioner of his own...Soilent Green!! Soilent and Rocky have rekindled their old alliance, and made it evident at Wars End that they were a force to be dealt with in this new era of the DWF. Wars End brought a number of surprises (as you can see above), including a NEW DWF champ: SNAKE FIGHT!!!  However, it's quickly become apparent that the real issue here in the DWF at the moment is the battle between Rich and his commissioner, Louis; and the ever-conniving Rocky and Soilent as they battle for dominant power over the DWF!  Thus, it seems only fitting that the theme for this years Taco Hell will be : A STRUGGLE FOR POWER!!!

-At the conclusion of Wars End, Snake Fight and Rich seemed to have formed a mutual alliance, even though they had a hard fought match for the DWF title earlier in the show. What will these 2 competitors have to say, and what is their plan for dealing with Rocky and Soilent?

-We here at DWFOnline have received some early reports on what is to be expected at Taco Hell...in fact, there have been quite a few reports, coming in from both the separate offices of Rocky and Rich.  However, due to the fact that some of them were clearly geared to favor either side, we're only reporting the news that came from BOTH offices, and thus we are concluding they have been Ok'ed by both sides:

-Along with the ..um... "team" of Snake Fight and Rich, it has been CONFIRMED that Commissioner Louis will be on hand for Taco Hell, making his first DWF appearance in almost 3 years!!  Since he has equal commissionership powers with Soilent, the power is divided out evenly...but can Commish Louis be beneficial enough to Rich to have an impact?

-Brand new DWF MWBYH champion Twisted will be defending his title for the first time against....James Green?! That's right, folks, reports coming in say that it has been confirmed that the "Main Event" has been re-hired by the DWF, and will be on-hand for Taco Hell!

-Pitfighter, mysteriously absent from Wars End, is scheduled to be present, and will be putting his Quad Cities Title up for grabs against...Mr. Sunday!?  Supposedly Mr. Sunday (along with Twisted) has impressed some people with his decision to branch away from Lord Fairington, and is receiving a QC title shot as a reward.  Even though Twisted and Mr. Sunday (who we hear are still calling themselves the "Congregation") were unsuccessful in gaining the Tag Title's last week, they are on a mission to prove themselves as big name competitors in the DWF.

-Lord Fairington himself will be on hand at Taco Hell, and will ALSO be facing Mr. Sunday. Should Mr. Sunday win the QC title, this match will be a non-title match. The gimmick here is that if Lord Fairington is successful over Mr. Sunday, he will have a shot at Twisted's (or James Green)  MWBYH Title at the next DWF show. It should be interesting to see what the good Lord has to say about his supposed followers turning their backs on his holy ways.

-DWF rookie Mastah J will also be in action, and reportedly will be facing a newcomer here to the DWF.

-Back to Pitfighter, what will he have to say about all of the changes in the DWF?... especially the fact that he seems to have lost his hard-earned shot at the DWF title, and the chance to hold both of the DWF's most prestigious titles at one time?

-As we mentioned before, the newly re-established Tag Title champions Rocky and Soilent have announced that they will be defending their belts TWICE at Taco Hell!  First off they will be giving Mr. Sunday and Twisted a rematch (Damn Mr. Sunday will be busy!), as " a show of respect for their world-class effort last time." (Clearly Rocky and Soilent don't sound too worried about this one.)  In addition, they will be facing none other than Rich Reckless....and a mystery opponent!  This match was announced from both offices, so we here at DWFOnline can only speculate the what this means.  Does Rich have a big surprise for us all when he announces his opponent, or is it Rocky and Soilent who will be deciding his partner, screwing Rich over once again?

-Trying to gain a bit of an upper-hand, Reckless has challenged Soilent to a match.  Soilent has accepted, and these two will continue their string of classic matches again at Taco Hell. And some advice for Rich from us here at DWFONline: you better have something up your sleeve if you want to avoid a double beatdown from Rocky and Soilent!

-And lastly, it has been confirmed that Snake Fight WILL be defending his DWF World Title at the main event of this amazing-looking show.  However, his opponent is unknown at this time, and Rocky has stated that HE personally will announce the opponent minutes before the match!
